Tutorial Request - Comic Coloring: Skin

Wed Apr 29, 2009, 1:37 PM
Alright. I'm a huge pack rat when it comes to tutorials, resources, and any tool that can be deemed useful for learning or in practice.

My current collections are as followed:

I've some requests though. While I'm open to any suggestions people have for really good brushes, textures, resources in general, I'm in real big need to learn some new digital coloring styles. I'd love to learn how to color more like a comic-book artist.

One of the biggest problems I have (outside comic book inking, I'll never be a *TimTownsend or *Pegasus316 (they're awesome!)) is coloring skin. I'm not sure why, but I've a major problem when it comes to coloring skin and getting that same...crispness that comic colorists seem to be able to. Mine tend to be way too 'airbrushy' and I'd like to get away from that.

I've not found any really good tutorials in coloring skin. If anyone out there is really good at it, and wants to share, I'd be grateful.

Some of the awesome colorists out there (not limited to, just ones I remember off the top of my head) are:

:iconbakanekonei:

:iconfrozenlilacs:

Hard coloring, is a good way to describe what I'm looking for - -as well as any tips/tutorials/resources out there for backgrounds and digital painting/coloring (especially) backgrounds. .. OH! And coloring Metal -- getting that 'gritty' texture.

thanks! tutorials are useful always! :D

If you find any good comic book style colouring tutorials could you drop me a line, god, I've been looking everywhere for that! It's frustrating!

I love how you colour btw, but I guess trying new things is good and you can improve your colouring overall with it :D

*daggerpoint has a few tuts on his website that I like, and he does have a couple on skin, and I do know he's drawn for a couple comics before. I'm not sure if the end result is too different from your end result.

"Comic style" in insanely broad though. I've seen comics done with no shading, with cel shading, and comics that looked like they were trying to be a photograph or a famous painting.

I have a bunch of tuts but they are for colored pencils @-@ I don't have a tablet lol. wouldn't know how good or compatable it would be with a laptop anyways. Good luck!

The next person you see, give them a smile and say hi. Because you never know if their husband is deployed and they need a little bit of happiness in their life, if you met an army wife be thankful. She is probably the strongest women you will ever meet.

Oh awesome! Thank you very kindly, as that's a big help :)

I've a very hard time (no pun intended) on using 'hard' brushes. It seems like they're too...stiff. I have a hard time to stop blending things.

Anyway. I wanted to thank you again, as this is perfect :) Thank you for sharing!

aww yes hard brushes can be a little scary at first. I work in Corel, so there is plenty of brush options to play around with. I think it really helps to have the shading on multiply layers, and if you want to soften the hard shadow in areas, just use an opaque eraser :D The trick is... knowing where to soften the hard shadows, but if you have a good understanding of form, that shouldn't be too hard  Glad it can help! I'm eager to see what new things you can try with your work  I've been watching you for a long time now, and I love seeing your art, it's beautiful

the best thing to do for gritty metal is to go get a good gritty metal texture and overlay it onto what your doing and mask it off.
:iconjoncuki:
also, i can make a skin tutorial if you want, and i can show you how to draw very comic booklike. If you give me a few days or so to make tutorials i could do that, or if you want to bug me on messenger i could go over it there with you if you wanted.
